The National School Walkout has been organized by the Women's March Youth EMPOWER group and will take place on March 14 at 10 a.m. and is scheduled to last 17 minutes.

There are other means of social action to support the walkout cause, he said, such as writing letters to elected officials; writing letters of support to students of Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Fla.; and holding voter registration drives. The principal at the school, Matthew Dick, sent a letter to parents that outlines safety plans for the walkout created to protest violence and honor the victims in Parkland.

"We respect students' rights to free speech", he wrote, adding, "Our role as school and district employees is not to participate in the activities or voice our own political opinions during the school day but to guide students toward research, reflection and advocacy as civic-minded citizens".

Students who participate "peacefully and orderly, and comply with directions from school staff to return to the building in a timely manner" will not be disciplined, the letter says.

In demanding Congress pass legislation to protect students, they point out that many of those high school students walking out will vote this November, and many others will cast their ballots in 2020.

St. Charles School District 303 officials will support students who choose to join in walkouts as well as those who choose not to participate, district spokeswoman Carol Smith said. "We can't stop kids from not coming to school in the morning or control what they do after school hours", Turner said. The event is supposed to last 17 minutes in honor of the 17 victims killed February 14 at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Fla. The walkout will entail about 50 students from the St.

Elsewhere across the nation, school districts have taken a different approach.

Hall County Schools Superintendent Will Schofield said administrators have discussed the issue with school leadership.

She said students who wish to participate will be "asked to do so respectfully and in accordance with the student leaders' direction". Students are undecided if they will take part in the national walkout. She also noted that students who do not wish to participate will be directed to the auditorium during the planned demonstration and discussion.

"We feel it's really an important part of learning democracy and something we want to support in our students", she said. For now, he said, student suspension and other disciplinary actions are off the table.

"Every message counts", said Hardin. "We just need to do a better job in making sure that we're involving them in the conversation, which is critical".

"I know (students) are very concerned about school safety, and I understand that", Teixeira said.
