Elon Musk says SpaceX will make 'short flights' to Mars next year

Articles, books, podcasts, and YouTube videos have debated the merits and practicalities of almost all of Musk's creations, innovations, and upcoming ideas.

Nolan, who was at ground control with Musk during the SpaceX launch, wanted to express how he felt "the only way he knew how", and ended the panel with three-minutes of footage that was captured that day.

"Why Falcon Heavy & Starman?" the billionaire entrepreneur said.

"There are a lot of negative things in the world - a lot of awful things happening all the time, lots of problems that need to get solved - but life can not just be about solving one miserable problem after another". Particularly if there's another World War in our future, we need to make sure "there's enough of a seed of human civilization to bring human civilization back". That is why we did it. We did for you.

The video shows never-before seen details of the endeavor.

"I don't really have a business plan", he admitted, which led to him revealing how close both Tesla and SpaceX came to folding in 2008, but that splitting his remaining money between the two saved both when he felt he could only afford to save one and let the other close. What I love most about those videos is that, instead of just bragging about their success, they include the loss of the center booster as well.

And at this year's SXSW panel for the TV show Westworld, Musk further explained why he did the seemingly insane (or pointless or revolutionary, depending on who you ask) things for which he's known.

Raptors halt Rockets' 17-game winning streak
A season-high 22 points from Jae Crowder saw the Utah Jazz produce a dominant fourth quarter and beat the Memphis Grizzlies 95-78. Toronto trailed by 17 in the second quarter but was able to outlast Blake Griffin and the Pistons in a back-and-forth thriller.

When Falcon Heavy lifted off, it became the most powerful operational rocket in the world by a factor of two.

Perhaps the most interesting, Musk spent a lot of time discussing the topic of life on Mars and the need for travel between planets.

He also countered the suggestion that Mars might be "some escape hatch for rich people" by highlighting the risks of the mission: "It will be like Shackleton's ad for Antarctic explorers: 'Difficult, dangerous, a good chance you'll die, excitement for those who survive.' That kind of thing".

"My point was AI is far more unsafe than nukes".

Elon Musk is unquestionably the most interesting businessman in Silicon Valley - arguably the world - thanks to his nearly single-handed reignition of the space race.

After a series of failures, Space X's Falcon Heavy rocket famously made it into space last month. It chronicles a theme park run and operated by androids called hosts.

If the fully reusable BFR is as cheap to operate as Musk expects, that would reduce the cost of spaceflight by orders of magnitude and open the way for the super-rocket's use to send people and payloads to the moon and other destinations as well. If the utility function of artificial intelligence is to maximise happiness of humans, a super-intelligent AI might decide that the best way to do that is to capture all humans and inject their brains with dopamine and serotonin.
