A private Turkish plane travelling from Sharjah in the United Arab Emirates to Istanbul with 11 people on board crashed in southwestern Iran on Sunday, a spokesman for Iran´s Civil Aviation Organization said.

Shortly before the plane dropped off the radar, the pilot requested to fly at a lower altitude, Iran's Civil Aviation Authority told local news media outlets. He said DNA tests would be needed to identify the dead.

Iranian state television quoted Mojtaba Khaledi, the spokesman of the country's emergency management organization, as saying the plane hit a mountain in Shahr-e Kord and burst into flames.

Those on board included Turkish heiress Mina Basaran and seven of her friends, all flying back from a party ahead of her planned wedding next month.

Sources say that the plane had a number of 11 people on board. "Iranian Red Crescent Society has dispatched 10 teams to the disaster area in ChaharMahal and bakhtiari province to search for possible survivors", Kınık said in his tweet.

Shahr-e Kord is some 230 miles (370 kilometres) south of the capital, Tehran.
