It wears an earnest message on its sleeve ― believe in yourself and love those around you, and you'll achieve your goals ― and leaves the fundamental building blocks at the door.
This is how L'Engle described a free-will sort of life, in the novel she began in 1959. I was deep in the heart of Meg and thinking about it.
As a classic of children's literature, A Wrinkle in Time has been ripe for a big budget film adaptation for years.
Perhaps DuVernay's most canny move lies in her casting, which involves some familiar faces reframed in fantastical dimensions, as well as marvelous discoveries. At 109 minutes, "A Wrinkle in Time" feels rushed, with key story elements dropped or glossed over. Now 14, she's easy and versatile screen company.
DuVernay's take on A Wrinkle In Time features masterful imagery and stirring performances from standout actors like Storm Reid, whose portrayal of Meg Murray is certainly worthy of the praise she has received. Deric McCabe is equally impressive as her little brother, Charles Wallace, and Oprah's mere presence is as powerful as promised. 4 years ago, her father (Chris Pine), a NASA scientist, disappeared and things haven't been the same since he left. One night, a stranger, Mrs. Whatsit (Reese Witherspoon) comes to the family's door with news: Their father is alive, and has uncovered a new way of traveling between worlds, called a "tesseract".
Winfrey's Mrs. Who is the grande dame, imposing with dramatic white hair, sparkling lips and eyes in various hues, and gems across her forehead, exhorting Meg to be a warrior in tones that recall the late poet Maya Angelou; Winfrey has said she was channeling both Angelou and the good witch Glinda. The novel's crushingly ordinary twins have been jettisoned from the movie. This gift no doubt explains why DuVernay has Deric McCabe play the character with such precious gravity, but - alas - the young fellow hasn't near the acting chops for what the role demands. And how to retain the story's human pulse amid such an effects-dependent and design-driven project?
Initial tracking suggests that "A Wrinkle in Time" may open in the mid-$30 million range, which might not even be enough to unseat Disney's "Black Panther" (which DuVernay passed on directing) from the No. 1 spot. The third tessering, comprising a shot of Earth and a shaft of light pointing the way to the kids' next stop, makes for a handsome transition. "It was one of the best collaborations for me". I try to say, 'It's just right now'. She's searching for the father she desperately misses, hoping to patch up the emptiness felt without his presence.
That being said, A Wrinkle in Timelooked like it had a lot going for it. As the nearly frighteningly precocious Charles Wallace, Deric McCabe is able to portray the characters intense intelligence without becoming obnoxious, a feat for a child of that age. So that made it easy to work on the movie. The New Zealand location filming, the California locales and the elaborate soundstage environments never fully mesh into a coherent style. So I really had to step into her shoes and become her, because I hadn't gone through the experience, so I really put my creative input into her. These choices clearly come from a very personal place for DuVernay, and it's lovely to see that diversity communicated with earnestness and intention. Turns out, A Wrinkle in Time isn't actually up to par.
