A helicopter carrying six people crashed in New York City's East River on Sunday, killing at least two and sending three to the hospital in critical condition.

In a separate statement, the Coast Guard said five people had been recovered from the helicopter.

The helicopter was being chartered for a photo shoot when it went down near Gracie Mansion, the mayoral residence.

One person managed to get out while five others remained trapped inside the helicopter, according to sources.

The skies over NY constantly buzz with helicopters carrying tourists, businesspeople, traffic reporters, medical teams and others. In June 2005, two helicopters crashed into the East River in the same week. "The other five did not", FDNY Commissioner Daniel Nigro said in a news conference Sunday night.

The cause of the accident was not immediately clear, but local media indicated the pilot had sent a distress signal that mentioned an engine problem shortly before the crash. The agency said it was investigating, and the National Transportation Safety Board would also probe the incident.
