China Allows Xi To Remain President Indefinitely

There were only two "no votes" and three abstentions from a total 3,000 delegates participating in the vote.

"People of our age all experienced an era where the top leader of China did not have term limits - this is the era of Mao Zedong, who is absolutely a heinous sinner for a thousand centuries, killing tens of millions of Chinese people and extinguishing the entire intellectual elite".

China heavily censors social media domestically and tolerates very little in the way of political dissent.

The amendments passed smoothly in the rubber stamp National People's Congress with only five dissenting votes.

Critics of the move said that China shifted from "one-party rule" to essentially a "one-man rule".

Xi, who took office in 2012, was scheduled to step down at the end of his second term in 2023, but with the new amendments, he will remain president for several more years.

An account on the micro-blogging website, Twitter called @StopXiJinping has been continuously encouraging others to join the campaign against Chinese President Xi Jinping.

The ending of the presidential term limit "will pose greatdanger to China, such as bringing another Cultural Revolution", he added, referring to the chaotic, decade-long mass campaign to weed out political opponents under Mao's rule. Thus, together with the end of term limits, the proposed revisions both signal the extent to which Xi Jinping has consolidated power, and trace the outlines of the policy program he intends to pursue, at home and overseas.

Contrary to being "surprising" as many are terming it, the removal of term limits on the office of the Chinese Presidency was only bound to happen. Accordingly, the phrase "great renewal of the Chinese race" has been used with increasing frequency in propaganda work targeting these communities, including events at which Chinese students in American colleges study and discuss Xi Jinping's speeches with PRC embassy staff (people.cn, January 2). It's a change many experts think will enable President Xi to further consolidate his own power and enable China to pursue its interests in the region more assertively.

The official China Daily reiterated a point previously made by the party's People's Daily that the amendment did not "imply lifetime tenure for any leader". To ensure the party's survival, communist leaders embarked on a bold experiment in the 1990s to create the Marxist-Leninist world's first formal system of succession.

"Shall Xi make mistakes in his policy decisions or take a wrong turn on the country's future development, there won't be any mechanism to make corrections beforehand or hold him accountable afterwards".

He has amassed power the likes of which has not been seen since Chairman Mao Zedong. In a clear departure from the past emphasis of such principles, including "collective leadership" and "democratic centralism", the politburo pronounced that "centralised and unified leadership of the Party Central" was the highest principle of the Party's leadership.

In a story Independent Media published previously, a professor of global relations at Renmin University of China, Wang Yiwei, said the amendments were vital for China's economic growth, as a longer term of office for the president would boost investor confidence and guarantee economic stability.
