Novak Djokovic (SRB) during his second round match against Taro Daniel (not pictured) in the BNP Paribas Open at the Indian Wells Tennis Garden.

"For me it felt like (the) first match I ever played on the tour".

The 12-time major victor led 5-2 in the opener, but Daniel fought back well to clinch the first set on a tie-break, and although Djokovic pulled level, 61 unforced errors from the five-time champion saw Daniel clinch victory after two-and-a-half hours.

"I was grateful to be out on the court after surgery that quickly but at the same time just didn't feel good at all", he added.

Djokovic scrambled to win the second set on Sunday but the rust from the layoff was evident as he made 62 unforced errors overall. "In the night-time, the ball is much slower".

'It is interesting when you go from night to day and you play a different opponent you never - you know there is a difference, but you also know there is a difference in opponent, and he plays different', Federer said. The surface doesn't react so much.

In other men's matches, David Ferrer of Spain defeated Tennys Sandgren of the U.S. 6-2, 7-6 (7/3).

'I was not even supposed to be here because of the surgery that was only five, six weeks ago. "But I recovered very quickly, and I got myself ready", the former 12-time Grand Slam champion told reporters, via BBC.

Federer staved off a set point in the second set tie-break to beat Delbonis 6-3 7-6 (8-6) and he will face 25th-seed Filip Krajinovic in the third round on Monday.

"And I was able to stay pretty tough, so I'm pretty proud of that, yeah".

For Daniel, this counts as the biggest win of his career and takes him into a third round meeting with Argentina's Leonardo Mayer, who defeated lucky loser Ruben Bemelmans, a late replacement for Kei Nishikori (withdrew with an illness) on Sunday. But you put extra effort to manage all that's happening in your head.

The Swiss star had won the first set when rain halted the second-round clash a day earlier and, while he did not have it all his own way when play resumed, he was still largely comfortable in advancing.

"But it's not easy to deal with this kind of frustrations after injuries or when you always be the favorite to win a tournament, you come here and you lose in first round".

Federer raced out to a 4-1 and 5-2 advantage in the second set, but Delbonis - who won the only other match the pair have played - rallied to force a tiebreak.

Frenchman Gael Monfils survived a match point before beating big-serving American John Isner 6-7 (5) 7-6 (3) 7-5 in a contest that had only one break.
