The Ministry of Electronics and IT (Meity) today said that a notice seeking details relating to breach of data from Facebook had been sent to Cambridge Analytica particularly with regard to reports in the media about questionable practices attributed to the UK-based firm in their efforts to influence elections.
According to the company's executives, the firm has worked in more than 200 elections around the world.
"We exploited Facebook to harvest millions of people's profiles".
Cambridge Analytica vigorously denies the charges levelled against it, and has called Wylie "a part-time employee who left his position in July 2014" who had no direct knowledge of how the firm had operated since. "That was the basis that the entire company was built on", Wylie toldThe Observer. "SCL undertook a behavioural research programme targeting over 75 per cent of households to assist the client in not only identifying the correct battlegrounds, but also the right audiences, messages and most importantly the right castes to target with their campaigns", Wylie's document notes.
Wylie said his reasons for coming clean was that he didn't think "military style information operations is conducive for any democratic process, whether a United States presidential or a local council race". "Cambridge Analytica did not share any GSR data with AIQ, We haven't had any communication with AIQ since December 2015", the company said in a tweet. "Aggregate IQ has never entered into a contract with Cambridge Analytica". The firm has been accused of setting up "honey traps" and sub-contracting former spies to help swing elections, after Nix was caught on Channel 4's cameras bigging up what his firm could offer beyond data crunching to a person posing as a Sri Lankan businessman.
Nix was suspended from his position as CEO of the controversial data company when it was alleged data from Facebook had been misused to influence the U.S. presidential election and the UK's Brexit referendum. But the app didn't just scrape the data from those subscribers but also from their Facebook friends, which amounted to a network of about 50 million people. The data was subsequently sold to Cambridge for political data mining and analysis purposes.
Kogan developed the app to look into the personalities of American voters and influence their behavior.
In March 2018, reports emerged in a number of influential media outlets of a major data breach on the popular social media site Facebook.
"Put a key logger in Kogan's computer in Russian Federation and you've got everything", Wylie said, adding: "It would make it incredibly easy for them to get access to this data".
Wylie said that Nix had a standard pitch that relied on his company's Mayfair offices and his Eton education, which presents a very posh veneer and plays well in the Commonwealth countries the business targets. "I've been working to understand exactly what happened and how to make sure this doesn't happen again".
Dehaye also suggested that Indian, Romanian and Kenya journalists should collaborate to investigate the matter further. In his deposition, he also named the Congress party.
An appearance by Zuckerberg before Congress would indicate the company is bowing to pressure at home in the most serious crisis in its 14-year history.
House of Commons Parliamentary committee has asked Zuckerberg to appear before it to answer questions regarding Facebook's link to the case.
