Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg will testify before the House Energy and Commerce Committee next week, the committee has announced.

Facebook stated on Wednesday that the personal information of up to 87 million users may have been improperly shared with political consultancy Cambridge Analytica, up from a previous news media estimate of more than 50 million, reports Reuters.

Two other US congressional committees have asked Zuckerberg to appear.

In Congress, Zuckerberg has faced demands by two other committees - the Senate Commerce Committee and the Senate Judiciary Committee - that he testify.

Facebook Inc Chief Executive Officer Mark Zuckerberg will testify next week before a congressional committee over a political consulting firm's misuse of customer data to interfere in the USA presidential election, US lawmakers said on Wednesday.

The US committee confirmed this afternoon that Mr Zuckerberg had accepted its invite.

The world's biggest social network faces probes on both sides of the Atlantic over the misuse of data, which Facebook attributed to a breach of terms of service by an academic researcher linked to the consulting firm working for Donald Trump's campaign. Ted Cruz's failed presidential campaign and Ben Carson, the famed neurosurgeon who also ran unsuccessfully for president in 2016.

Facebook also said at the time it would investigate all applications that had gotten access to large amounts of data before the firm changed its platform in 2014, would further restrict developers' data access and roll out a tool to let users more easily revoke access by applications to their data.

Overall, Facebook says 87 million of its users were affected - with almost 82 per cent of them were believed to be located in the United States. The company spent just over $13 million on lobbying in 2017, with the bulk of the money spent on an in-house lobbying team that's stocked with former Republican and Democratic political aides, according to disclosure records filed with the House and Senate.
