Facebook to let research commission access proprietary user data

An Update on Our Plans to Restrict Data Access on Facebook | Facebook Newsroom Facebook To Send Cambridge Analytica Data-Use Notices

The company is facing the worst privacy crisis in its 14-year history after whistleblowers revealed that the personal information of tens of millions users, mainly in the U.S., was obtained by political consultancy firm Cambridge Analytica.

He will then explain how Facebook aims to prevent this from ever happening again, such as more scrutiny of developers and limits on the amount of information they can collect in their apps.

Facebook said most of the affected users (more than 70 million) are in the USA - though there are more than a million each in the Philippines, Indonesia and the UK. He's set to testify before Congress next week.

Approximately 87 million of Facebook's account holders may have had their personal information shared, according to the social media company.

Zuckerberg will testify before a joint hearing of the Senate Judiciary and Commerce Committees on Tuesday and before the House panel on Wednesday.

Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg will tell Congress in scheduled appearances this week that his company should have spotted Russian interference in the US presidential election earlier, a transcript of his testimony released on April 9 says. The CEO will face questions over the data harvesting scandal, and also be asked about the spread of misinformation on his platform - "fake news" - and interference with elections.

"It's clear now that we didn't do enough to prevent these tools from being used for harm as well".

Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg expressed contrition for allowing third-party apps to grab the data of its users without their permission and for being "too slow to spot and respond to Russian interference" during the United States election, according to his prepared remarks published by the House Energy and Commerce Committee.

Zuckerberg said he's committed to working with lawmakers and safeguarding the democratic process. Prior high-profile hearings have been streamed live on both Facebook and YouTube, while C-SPAN will also be showing both Day One and Day Two to its paying customers. "And really, you know, what you're seeing is Facebook sending out the message incrementally that, hey, we know that our borders were porous, but we're building a wall". Facebook's share price has dropped almost 15 per cent since news of Cambridge Analytica came to light in mid-March.

Zuckerberg's written statement was released ahead of two days of congressional hearings in which he will not only try to restore public trust in his company but also stave off federal regulation that some lawmakers have floated.

"Facebook never publicly disclosed the removal of messages from users' inboxes, nor privately informed the recipients". Associated Press reporters around the world have been surveying users, none of whom have reported seeing anything from Facebook.

Over the weekend, Facebook announced that it had suspended AggregateIQ (AIQ), a Canada-based data-mining firm used by the official pro-Brexit campaign group, Vote Leave. That was the giant loophole the British researcher legitimately used to access data but then unjustly sold to Cambridge Analytica.

Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg has already apologized to users for not doing enough to protect their privacy.

"We organised "get out the vote" efforts that helped more than 2 million people register to vote who might not have voted otherwise", Zuckerberg says.

Zeynep Tufekci from University of North Carolina apprehended that the testimony just turns into congressional spectacle, that lawmakers yell at Zuckerberg.
