However, unlike similar features in Proton Mail, self-destructing messages in Google don't simply delete themselves like you'd expect.

Google is reportedly working on an overhaul of Gmail for web which will see a new design along with several new features, including a Confidential Mode. Working on an email service is hard as you have to be compatible with all sorts of email providers and email clients.

In response to the outcry, the head of the Google's cloud division said the company would establish a code of ethics to "guide the company's use of its technology and products", according to a report from Defense One.

Gmail may also introduce "self-destructing e-mails", which become inaccessible after a set amount of time, TechCrunch reported Friday based on leaked screenshots. In addition, the sender is given the option to set an expiration time/date for the email ranging from hours to years. It further states that the recipient won't be able to forward, download or copy the email's contents, and attachments will be disabled. However, the feature is still under development, as the option "Learn More" now redirects to a blank page. However, when it expires the email will disappear from the inbox. The receivers will need to log in again in Gmail to access the message. The interesting thing to note that when viewing the confidential message, copy/paste and print features were disabled, but TechCrunch's source was still able to take a screenshot of the email. It is still not clear whether the Gmail service users will be able to send the confidential/self-destructing emails to the other email platforms or not.

While Google, Microsoft, Amazon and Oracle are viewed as the major contenders for the job, Google's employees have voiced concern about creating products for the USA government. The new design is said to also come with a feature that would ensure only the recipient can view an e-mail and that too for a specific period of time. Google has not mentioned end-to-end encryption anywhere, which means the company is most likely to stick with non-encrypted emails.
