The maximum-security facility in Bishopville houses about 1,500 inmates. It took until about 3 a.m. Monday until the violence ended.

Deadly prison riots have been relatively rare in the United States, despite some notable exceptions.

The department had initially described the riot as an "ongoing incident", only revealing the scope of the problem hours after its start at 7:15 pm Sunday.

Corey Scott, 38, serving 22 years for kidnapping.

Raymond Angelo Scott was serving time for crimes out of Sumter County including assault and battery and gun convictions.

No employees or law-enforcement officers were injured, the department said.

Seven inmates are dead and 17 others were injured after hours of fighting inside a SC maximum security prison. Officials didn't immediately say what sparked the violence.

A reason for that, in turn, is low pay, with the Post and Courier pointing out that a prison guard has an annual starter salary of about $27,000 - about $4,000 less than a garbage truck driver would bring home. Seventeen other inmates required outside medical attention. "If they're supposed to have two (guards), they have one", said Ed Bell, an attorney with the Bell Law Group who represents clients who are inmates at Lee Correctional Institution.

Since 2014, the state has raised the salaries of correctional officers at maximum security prisons by $6,700 while hiring 100 more officers - a 5.8 percent increase, according to Department of Corrections data. State Law Enforcement Division agents arrived at the scene and were able to stop the violence that took the lives of seven at Lee Correctional Institution.

Stirling was appointed by then-Gov.

Governor Henry McMaster commended Mr Stirling's response and said he was outraged the state was not allowed to jam mobile phone signals in prisons. When McMaster took over as governor past year, he kept Stirling, who had previously worked for him in the state Attorney General's Office. They were not able to seize control of the prison until 7 ½ hours, 17 injuries, and at least seven casualties later. The prisoner also alleged that the corrections officers did not check on the wounded. Most of the victims appeared to have died as a result of stabbings or slashings with homemade knives, known as "shanks". He says others may have been beaten, but autopsies will be needed to confirm what caused their deaths.

The names of those killed were released this morning, per The State. According to Stirling, the injured inmates required medical attention outside the prison, which made restoring order more hard for authorities.

Sunday's deadly riot is just one of several violent episodes at the maximum security prison in recent years. The fighting, involving multiple inmates, spread to three housing units before it was secured at around 2:55 a.m. Monday.
