Play Store Is Filled With Android Apps Tracking Kids' Online Activity
18 April, 2018, 00:17
Seven researchers analysed almost 6,000 apps for children and found that majority of them on Google Play Store are tracking data on kids in violation of the Children's Online Privacy Protection Act, or COPPA, which regulates data collection from users who are under 13 years old. And now, Facebook has come out with a detailed response to relevant questions about the information the company receives from other websites and apps, how Facebook uses that data, and the options users have. This webpage allows developers to choose which Android devices they don't want installing their app, mainly for compatibility reasons. After the analysis of over five thousand kids and family focused apps, it is proved that about 19 percent of the apps share sensitive information to third-party services whose terms of services forbid them to use kid's app, as they are engaged in behavioral advertising.
All the apps analyzed in their study are part of the GooglePlay Store "Designed for Families" (DFF) program, a section of the Play Store that lists only apps that developers say are COPPA compliant, so at least in theory, these apps should not have had any violations.
The study looked at 5,855 apps targeted at children, which had each been downloaded an average of 750,000 times, the researchers said.
To conduct the study, researchers modified Android's permission system to enable the real-time monitoring of apps' access to protected resources (like location data, address book contacts, etc.) and instrumented all the functions in the Android platform that access these sensitive resources. The study also found that 40% of these apps shared personal information without proper security protocols, and 39% disregarded contractual obligations aimed at protecting children's privacy. Some of these apps include KidzInMind, TabTale's Pop Girls-High School Band, and Fun Kid Racing.
This will help ensure that your children aren't heading anywhere they shouldn't be. According to COPPA, using the behavioural advertising techniques on children is prohibited in the US. But they said "as our results show, there appears to not be any (or only limited) enforcement".
