Romaine lettuce is off the menu of U.S. households and restaurants, health authorities ordered on Friday after a spreading E.coli outbreak infected 53 people in 16 states. The new warning says to throw away all types of romaine lettuce from the Yuma, Arizona area. Consumers are also being told not to buy or eat romaine lettuce at a grocery store or restaurant unless you can confirm it wasn't grown in the Yuma, Arizona region.

The agency said it traced the infection to romaine lettuce after interviewing numerous sick people and asking about the foods they had eaten and other exposures before they became ill. No deaths have yet been reported.

If you have romaine lettuce at home, you're being advised by the CDC to throw it away, unless you can verify where the lettuce was grown.

To keep yourself and your family safe, the CDC recommends avoiding any romaine lettuce products that could be contaminated. The latest update comes after state and local officials in Alaska interviewed sick people at a correctional facility regarding the foods that they consumed as well as the possible exposures they had before they got sick. Five people have developed a type of kidney failure called hemolytic uremic syndrome.

For the second time since January, it's time to throw out all chopped romaine after the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported it could be tainted with E. coli. This should be done even if people have eaten some of the lettuce without becoming ill. "The restaurants reported using bagged, chopped romaine lettuce to make salads".

The CDC expanded the warning Friday afternoon to all forms of romaine lettuce.

Starting on April 10th, the CDC announced an investigation into outbreaks of a particular strain of E. coli which first appeared in Pennsylvania and New Jersey. Microbes in these wastes can cause short-term health effects, such as diarrhea, cramps, nausea, headaches, or other symptoms.

Most people with HUS recover within a few weeks, but some suffer permanent damage or die.

Most E. coli are harmless and actually are an important part of a healthy human intestinal tract.
