The CDC warning, due to an outbreak of E. coli linked to romaine lettuce, has been expanded to include all forms of romaine, including whole heads and hearts of romaine grown in the Yuma, Arizona, growing area.

Consumers anywhere in the United States who have store-bought romaine at home, including salads and salad mixes containing that lettuce, should throw it away immediately, federal health officials said - even if some had already been eaten with no ill effects.

Despite a nationwide recall on romaine lettuce grown in the Yuma, Ariz. area, lettuce found in Harvard's residential dining halls is safe for consumption, according to Harvard University Dining Services Director of Communications Crista Martin. Zero deaths have been reported.

Based on this new information, the FDA is advising that consumers avoid all romaine lettuce from Yuma.

No specific grower, supplier, distributor, or brand has been identified at this time. Symptoms of infection include bad stomach cramps, diarrhea (often bloody) and vomiting.

Those case numbers are not yet included in the outbreak totals. If you do not know if the lettuce is romaine, do not eat it and throw it away.

Romaine lettuce is sometimes packed in the field and shipped directly to restaurants or grocery stores.

The illness has now sickened 53 people in 16 states, including seven people in New Jersey and 12 in Pennsylvania, according to the state Department of Health.

The different ways that romaine lettuce is harvested could make identifying the specific origin of contamination more hard, Marler said.

CDC officials say the outbreak investigation is ongoing.

Illnesses started on dates ranging from March 13 to April 6 and affected people 10 to 85 years old, the CDC reported Wednesday.

Eating food or drinking water that has been contaminated by E. coli bacteria may cause gastrointestinal distress.
