It was widely predicted that neither Macron's personal rapport with Trump nor Merkel's more businesslike approach would sway him on policy - after all, the American president's positions on both Iran and trade are popular with his political base. The reason for its disappearance has been answered.

On April 24, macron while on a state visit to the USA offered the idea of a new deal at a joint White House press conference with his us counterpart as a way of salvaging the 2015 agreement, which Trump has threatened to leave. The sapling was taken from the woods northeast of Paris, where almost 2,000 American soldiers died during World War I.

The British diplomat's visit to Tehran comes as the May 12 deadline looms over the fate of the JCPOA when U.S. President Donald Trump will decide whether to extend waivers of economic sanctions on Iran, a U.S. commitment under the nuclear agreement.

News photographers snapped away Monday when Trump and Macron shoveled dirt onto the tree during a ceremonial planting on the South Lawn.

When a follower fired back that the caution seemed a bit late - given that the tree had already been planted - the diplomat went on to confirm that the roots had been enclosed in plastic.

A pale patch of grass now covers the spot.

Now the oak sapling is gone - at least temporarily.

Almost 2,000 USA soldiers died in the battle north-east of Paris. The tree originated from a forest in northern France where 2,000 U.S. Marines lost their lives during World War I and another 7,000 sustained injury, according to a CNBC report.

By the end of last week, though, the tree was nowhere to be found. People questioned why Trump or White House officials would have dug up the tree.

The Elysee Palace said in a separate statement that president Macron expressed hope during phone talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin on Monday that Moscow would play a significant role in the settlement of a number of challenging issues in the Middle East.
