Confirming the deaths, Abdaddaem al-Rabti, an official of the public Tripoli Field Hospital, told Xinhua late Wednesday that nine commission employees, four security personnel and two terrorists had died while 21 people were injured.

Speaking earlier, a member of the electoral commission said that a group of gunmen had attacked the commission's main office in Tripoli's Ghut Shaal district. There were no details available on the fate of the assailants.

At the moment no one has claimed responsibility for the attack.

Images shared on social media showed pillars of thick smoke rising from the site. Reports said they men then engaged security forces in a street battle.

A group of militants, including at least two suicide bombers, stormed the building and set fire to it.

Libya's health ministry published a "provisional toll" of three seriously wounded.

Meanwhile, the Interior Minister reiterated the need for ending terror and armed conflicts, saying the security personnel have taken full control of the situation and handled the attackers. "The choice and future of Libyans were targeted".

Libya has been in turmoil since the 2011 fall of the government of Muammar al-Qadhafi.

Elections in 2014 were disputed, resulting in rival governments backed by competing military alliances in Tripoli and the east.

The electoral commission has been registering voters in anticipation of elections that the United Nations hopes can be held in Libya by the end of the year.

Some Libyans and members of the worldwide community have questioned the push for new elections this year, expressing concern about the lack of security as well as legal and logistical challenges.
