Local elections held in parts of the United Kingdom on Thursday gave a partial indication of the growing polarisation between the classes due to deepening social inequality.

Obviously, I am disappointed at any places where we lost a bit of ground, but if you look at the overall picture, Labour gained a lot of seats across the whole country, we gained a lot of votes in places we never had those votes before.

This was not alleviated by the nature of a poll which at least notionally prioritised local issues.

Denying his party has passed the moment of "peak Corbyn", the Labour leader said: "There is much more to come, and it's going to get even better".

While May could be criticised for lacking the political skills to sell a positive Brexit vision in Leave-leaning places such as Thurrock, the fact that the Conservatives held on to key London councils such as Wandsworth and Westminster will temper criticism from the Remain wing of the party.

Elsewhere in London, Labour failed where they should have succeeded.

In London, the Conservatives gained seats in Hillingdon (which some proposed as a potential Labour target) and won nine more seats in Sutton, despite the area being in control of the Liberal Democrats. They also held on to Kensington and Chelsea, despite heavy criticism over the Grenfell Tower disaster.

Overall the borough turnout increased from an average of 30 percent of voters in 2014 to around 40 percent.

The party has been virtually left on the fringes of national politics, seen as a punishment for its five years as a partner in a coalition government with the Conservatives.

London Mayor Sadiq Khan had said before the vote: There is now no corner of London where Labour can't win - and with enough hard work we can challenge the Tories even in their crown jewels of Wandsworth and Barnet. Although it's hard to extrapolate to general election constituencies, the Richmond result especially must concern the party for its parliamentary seats of Richmond Park and Putney. At these local elections, the Conservatives benefitted from this restructuring of UKIP supporters, gaining Basildon, bringing Dudley to an even split with Labour and nearly decimating Labour's leads in North-East Lincolnshire and Nuneaton and Bedworth - all of which were heavily Leave-voting areas.

Brexit may be continuing to reshape the battle between Labour and the Conservatives, but it still appears to be largely passing the Liberal Democrats by.

The Tories had "talked up our chances to unrealistic levels, especially in London".

'She was in tears and told me for the first time in her life she would not be voting Labour.

Its biggest victory came in Plymouth - visited yesterday by Mr Corbyn - and it became the largest party in Trafford, Greater Manchester. It had just three councillors elected, after losing 123. Homelessness in the borough now stands at a national high of one in 25 people.

But the Labour leader has refused to bite on the negative spin around the election.

"In both Westminster and Wandsworth, Labour did better-in seats-than at any election since 1986".

The election results, due to start being declared in the early hours of Friday morning, will be viewed as a gauge of public support for May as she faces a possible revolt over her strategy for leaving the European Union.

- The Tories suffered a net loss of two councils and have 96 fewer councillors.

Labour had "moved on slightly since the general election".

Some media commentators said the two big parties, Conservative and Labor, were deadlocked, but both prime minister Theresa May and main opposition Labor leader Jeremy Corbyn hailed the results for their respective parties. He is not anti-semitic but there are people in the Labour Party now who are'.
