Two coal mines collapse in Pakistan, 23 killed

Death toll from coal mine accidents climbs to 23 Pakistan's twin coal mine accidents claim 23 lives, injure 6 people

At least 23 miners have been killed in accidents triggered by a gas explosion at a coal mine in western Pakistan, officials said.

The bodies of five more miners, who were trapped in the mine, were recovered later, increasing the death toll to seven.

The mines are in an area where such accidents are common because of poor enforcement of safety regulations. The explosions were not linked.

The blast in the Marwar coalfields in Baluchistan province was caused by a build-up of methane gas inside the mine, director of disaster management Attaullah Khan said.

During the protest outside Quetta Press Club on Sunday, the demonstrators chanted slogans against the Balochistan government and said action should be taken against the authorities responsible for safety at coal mines in the province.

"We have recovered all the 16 bodies from the rubble caused by the collapse in the coal mine", Atique said. Rescue work was in process, Chief Inspector of Mines Iftikhar Ahmad had said.

"So far 16 dead bodies and six injured miners have been recovered from the mine", he said.

Quetta Commissioner Javed Anwar Shahwani confirmed that 16 miners were killed in the Marwar mines. Seven people died and two were wounded.

Twelve coal miners have also been injured in both the incidents. Dozens of miners get killed each year in the country due to lack of modern mining facilities, training and equipment.

At least 30 labours were present inside the mine when the blast occurred.
