A pervasive gloom has descended over even the most upbeat of United Kingdom officials involved in the Brexit negotiations.
"I know he's Leader of the Opposition but that's going a bit far".
Another high-ranking official was more blunt: "God help us all!"
Brexit campaigners have come out against what some say is May's preferred option for future ties with the European Union, throwing their weight behind another proposal - one dependent on technology to make any new customs facilities as invisible as possible.
He repeatedly criticised the government's approach to Brexit and said in his final remarks: "How can they negotiate in the future interests of people's jobs and living standards when Cabinet members are more interested in putting their own futures first?"
But he said: "If the United Kingdom continued to have a very close relationship with the European Union when it comes to customs and the goods and merchandise element of the single market, it would certainly make the job a lot easier".

"They don't trust Labour and they don't trust their leader". We would have absolutely no leverage. "We have to get this right". "It would be a disaster", one United Kingdom official said.
"We don't believe that we have to stay in the customs union to have free flow between ourselves and the Republic."
Meanwhile Business Secretary Greg Clark confirmed that the Prime Minister's rejected customs partnership plan is still on the table.
The Brexiteers, in contrast, led by Johnson, Brexit Secretary David Davis and and International Trade Secretary Liam Fox, are concerned about the complexity of the customs partnership.
Mrs May criticised Labour's policy as "not credible", arguing it would give "all the power for negotiating our trade deals to Brussels".
Johnson told Tuesday's edition of the Daily Mail newspaper that the partnership idea was "crazy" and would create a "whole new web of bureaucracy".
The plan would see the United Kingdom collect customs duties on goods bound for the EU.
"Lots of slightly inexpert people are groping around for ideas", said one senior United Kingdom official. The choice is unavoidable, but both sides are now sticking to their guns. "[Some] are practically doable, but surely politically suicidal".
