Coli outbreak spreads, 4 more states included

The E. coli outbreak tied to romaine lettuce seems to keep getting bigger: Just this past week, an additional 28 illnesses tied to the outbreak were reported, bringing the total to 149 cases in 29 states, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

One hundred forty-nine cases of E. coli infections have been reported in the United States since March 22 - including one death in California. We don't know exactly where in Texas that person lives.

The CDC still believes that lettuce grown in the Yuma, Arizona, region is still the primary cause of the outbreak, but the group has thus far been unable to pinpoint exactly where in the distribution chain the contamination is occurring.

Romaine lettuce is no longer being grown or distributed from this region, according to the FDA.

"Of the 112 people interviewed, 102, or 91%, reported eating romaine lettuce in the week before their illness started", the CDC announced on its website May 9. Sixty-four people have been hospitalized and one person in California has died. Seventeen have developed a unsafe form of kidney failure, and one person in California has died. No recalls have been issued in direct connection to the Escherichia coli O157:H7 outbreak.

Symptoms of E. coli typically begin three to four days after the bacteria is ingested. Last week, it identified Harrison Farms as the source of a single outbreak at a correctional facility in Nome, Alaska, that sickened eight inmates. They include severe stomach cramps, diarrhea and vomiting. With supportive treatment, most people recover in a matter of five to seven days.

Officials say other area farms could also be affected since numerous E. coli poisoning cases can be traced to chopped lettuce sold in bagged form to restaurants that didn't come from that Yuma farm.

In April, the CDC warned Americans to toss out any romaine lettuce they might have bought in stores.

Jaron Barnes, produce department manager at the Walmart in Rexburg, said that E. coli is something they take very seriously and they have done everything they can to prevent customers from consuming any contaminated lettuce.
