Eventually, the topic moved on to health care, bringing relief to many in the room.

"I have to laugh at John Roberts' discussion of his conversation with John Kelly, the chief of staff, because the White House is pushing back and DHS is pushing back on the notion that Secretary Nielsen was on the verge of quitting, and now Kelly says to our own John Roberts--good reporting--'I wanted to call her to make sure she wasn't gonna quit.' So I guess the cover story didn't hold very long". "You'll be processed. We have asylum laws", Nielsen said during a congressional hearing. She was retired Marine Corps General John Kelly's chief of staff when he was secretary of homeland security during the opening months of Trump's presidency.

The hot-button issue of immigration continues to be one of the President's biggest, and most controversial, talking points. In a statement Thursday, a spokesman for the agency said that was false.

A Department of Homeland Security spokesman poured cold water on a report claiming its chief nearly resigned after an angry outburst by President Trump.

One White House official said Nielsen was in the building again Thursday.

The White House did not immediately respond to Newsweek's request for comment. "I share his frustration", she said in a statement.

Trump, who has grown increasingly frustrated by a spike in border apprehensions and legal setbacks, blamed Nielsen Wednesday for failing to do enough to stop them, according to people familiar with the exchange.

Homeland Security's deputy secretary position is vacant, so there would be no immediate replacement if Nielsen were to step down. Nielsen countered Trump's admonishment, stating that she was following the law as it was intended. However, she didn't submit the letter and the White House denied any such claims.

Donald Trump had grown angry in recent weeks for reports of a roughly 1,200-person "caravan" of asylum-seekers from Central America traveling toward the USA border. Families are typically broken up in those circumstances, as federal immigration agents send children to government shelters while their mothers and fathers remain in custody awaiting court dates.

A caravan of Central American migrants traveling through Mexico seized the president's attention this spring, and in the weeks that followed he frequently asked Homeland Security for updates, administration officials said.

According to DHS data, there were about 30,186 total cases of foreign nationals claiming credible fear and thus requesting asylum in the US between October and December 2017 - at the same time that an amnesty for illegal aliens was being considered by Congress and President Trump's administration.
