Starbucks changes bathroom policy

Starbucks Chairman Opens Up About The Company's Race Failures Says Bathrooms Now Open To All Starbucks CEO meets with two black men arrested at Philadelphia store

The decision came following the controversy that occurred after officers arrested two black men accused of loitering at a downtown Philadelphia Starbucks last month.

"We don't want to become a public bathroom", Schultz said.

The arrests on April 12 happened when two men, business partners Donte Robinson and Rashon Nelson, were waiting for someone inside the Starbucks.

Schultz, speaking at the Atlantic Council in Washington, claimed star-bucks had a "free coverage" on bath usage, The Washington, The Seattle Times, and other media outlets documented.

"Because we don't want anyone at Starbucks to feel as if we are not giving access to you to the bathroom because you are less than".

Schultz explained that the chain's "loose policy" until now has been - theoretically, at least - that "you should be able to use the bathroom if you buy something", but then added that it's "really the judgement of the manager", and the manager of the Philly store, in particular, "made a awful decision to call the police".

They asked to use the bathroom, but were turned away because they were not paying customers.

Filmmaker Stanley Nelson will feature the training in an upcoming documentary, Schultz added. "And it's really the judgment of the manager". And one thing led to another.

'It's the company that's responsible'.

As for the ubiquitous coffee shop franchise and this seemingly isolated incident, Starbucks announced it would close over 8,000 stores on May 29 to hold anti-racial bias training.

The arrests in Philadelphia were a major embarrassment for Starbucks, which has long projected itself as a socially conscious company. Neither man had made a purchase.

In the case of the Philadelphia store, however, the manager's judgment didn't cut it. Schultz said that the manager is that instance "made a awful decision to call the police".
