But already there are three separate locations covering 60 km or more, and some of the victims were healthcare workers, potentially "an amplification factor" for outbreaks, Salama said.

"My ministry established the National Health Emergencies Council to work expeditiously to prevent importation of any virus or disease".

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Ebola, officially known as Ebola virus disease, is a rare condition caused by an infection with one of five known Ebola virus species. Ebola is fatal in about 50 per cent of cases.

Six months after an Ebola outbreak was confirmed in West Africa in March 2014, the World Health Organization declared an worldwide emergency and called for help. The CDC reports that health care providers for Ebola patients are at highest risk.

The virus is transmitted to people from wild animals and spreads in the human population through human-to-human transmission.

On Tuesday, Ilunga requested support to strengthen the response to this outbreak.

Information is now limited and investigations are ongoing to assess the full extent of the outbreak. Despite it occurring outside an urban area, this particular outbreak may be harder to contain because it has already spread across 56 kilometres. That outbreak was quickly contained due to joint efforts by the government, the World Health Organization and other partners.

The head of the World Health Organisation says he and Democratic Republic of Congo's health minister have agreed that Ebola vaccines will be shipped "as quickly as possible" as the number of suspected cases in the latest outbreak grows.

At least 18 people have died in what appears to be the worst outbreak of the Ebola virus since a catastrophic 2014 epidemic in western Africa claimed more than 11,000 lives. The disease went on to ravage three countries and kill over 11,000 people.

This is the fourth time that an Ebola outbreak has been reported in the former province of Equateur, following those of 1976, 1977 and 2014.

It comes after Ebola fears prompted emergency measures in Nigeria across the border.

Mr Salama told a regular United Nations briefing in Geneva he hoped Congo would give the green light within days for the deployment of an experimental vaccine, but he warned that the drug was complicated to use and not a magic bullet. Salama noted that the organization was concerned over the situation in the country and was preparing for the worst-case scenario development.
