More than nine people have been killed and forty other injured bomb attacks, including a suicide blast, targeting churches in Indonesia's second biggest city, Surabaya.

Indonesia, which will begin the holy fasting month Ramadan this week, has been on high alert after a string of recent plots and attacks by militants inspired by IS.

Indonesia has long struggled with domestic terrorist groups, particularly the al-Qaeda affiliated group Jemaah Islamiyah, which claimed responsibility for 11 bombing attacks between 2000 and 2010, including the deadly 2002 Bali bombings, which left more than 200 people dead and hundreds injured, many of them tourists.

In 2016, ISIS said it carried out a suicide bombing and shooting near a Starbucks in Jakarta. A large blast was heard hours after the attacks, which Mangera said was a bomb disposal squad "securing" a remaining device. Inspector General Machfud Arifin told CNN Indonesia that a motorbike was used in the attack.
