Apparently, around 200 Facebook apps out of "thousands" have made it to a point in the second phase, as those unnamed apps have been suspended "pending a thorough investigation into whether they did in fact misuse any data".
Facebook revealed that it has suspended about 200 apps over misleading user's data. Where we find evidence that these or other apps did misuse data, we will ban them and notify people via this website. "It was installed by around 300,000 people who shared their data as well as some of their friends' data", Zuckerberg said.
Facebook co-founder and CEO Mark Zuckerbergpromised the company would conduct a thorough investigation and audit after Cambridge Analytica harvested information from as many as 87 million users without their knowledge.
The New Scientist said Cambridge Analytica, which was shut down earlier this month in a blaze of bad publicity, tried to gain access to the myPersonality data in much the same way it did with Kogan's research.
The report notes that the app, developed by Cambridge University researchers, had advertised its data sharing as being anonymous, but poor security meant the profiles could be de-anonymized.
The first phase, now underway, consists of Facebook employees and external experts reviewing apps to identify those which had access to an extremely large amount of user data.
David Stillwell told the New Scientist that Facebook was aware of the app and had participated in meetings discussing the project. Facebook also plans to ban the infringing apps from accessing their platform for good.
Facebook's announcement is rather short and it lacks concrete details, but the company still deemed it necessary to publish it on Monday. Why?
The investigation, which Archibong says is "in full swing", has covered thousands of apps so far (no word on how many apps Facebook has left to scrutinize). It's investigating all apps which had access to user information before a revised 2014 policy restricted it.
Do you trust Facebook to safeguard your data?
We don't know if Facebook knew about these 200 apps at that time, or how many people were affected by them.
