The Upper West Side nanny found guilty of killing two children in 2012 was sentenced to two life sentences without the possibility of parole on Tuesday.

Kevin Krim, the father of the children Ortega murdered, 6-year-old Lucia "Lulu" Krim and 2-year-old Leo Krim, gave an emotional impact statement, criticizing Ortega's family for lying about her background so she could get a job.

The mother of the two children, Marina Krim, told the judge Ortega destroyed her family and neither the nanny nor Ortega's family has since shown remorse for their actions.

Ahead of hearing her fate, a tearful Ortega, 55, apologized in court to Lucia and Leo's family.

Addressing the decide, Mr Krim stated:Â "The defendant is an evil and totally harmful narcissist".

Ortega was also struggling to pay tuition fees for her 17-year-old son, whom she had brought to the U.S. from the Dominican Republic and enrolled in a private school.

She had been at a swimming class together with her three-year-old daughter, Nessie, whereas Ortega was to have dropped off Lucia at her dance class, and Mrs Krim was to select her up.

Ortega had been working for the Krim family for about two years when she took the children to a bathroom of their apartment and killed them in 2012.

"My life is in the hands of God", she said. The lawyer argued she was too mentally ill to know what she was doing.

Ortega was facing life in prison without parole.

"We could not find a strongly credible proof that the defendant was not aware and able to recognize what was going on", Curtis said.

The prosecution said Ortega deliberately planned the murders and was motivated by financial problems and resentment of her wealthy employers. She had been working for the Krim family for almost two years when she took the children to the back bathroom of their apartment and killed them.

Ms Krim was afterwards found by police crying and crying hysterically, clutching for her living child.

However when she arrived, Lulu wasn't there and he or she frantically tried to achieve Ortega, who had labored for the household for about two years.

Krim took Nessie back upstairs, where they saw Ortega sitting next to the bathtub on the floor stabbing herself, in what authorities believe was an attempt to take her own life. Each time she makes a wish, it's always for Leo and Lulu to come back to be with us. "This had been authentic", Ms Krim experienced instructed jurors.

Prosecutors argued that Ortega was jealous of Marina Krim's life and lashed out in the worst way possible - at her children.
