Recently Facebook released internal guidelines on what content violates its rules.

This report covers Facebook's enforcement efforts between October 2017 to March 2018, and it covers six areas: graphic violence, adult nudity and sexual activity, terrorist propaganda, hate speech, spam and fake accounts.

Nevertheless, Facebook said that it "removed 2.5 million pieces of hate speech in Q1 2018", and that 38 percent of it was flagged by the social network's automated systems.

While the 583 million fake Facebook accounts and their removal is perhaps the biggest takeaway from this report, the company pointed out how the metrics of flagging and removal had improved when compared to previous quarters - such as improvements in photo detection technology that can detect both old and newly posted content.

This, Rosen says, is in addition to the millions of fake accounts that are blocked from registering on a daily basis yet even still, it is estimated that as many as four percent of the active Facebook accounts during the quarter were still fake.

A Bloomberg report last week showed that while Facebook says it's become effective at taking down terrorist content from al-Qaida and the Islamic State, recruitment posts for other US -designated terrorist groups are found easily on the site.

- Facebook took enforcement action against 21 million posts containing nudity. Facebook's technology did a better job of finding graphic violence and automatically identified 86% of the 3.5 million pieces of that kind of content that was removed during the period. It refrained from showing how prevalent terrorist propaganda and hate speech is on the platform, saying it couldn't reliably estimate either.

Today's report was Facebook's first breakdown of how much material it removes for violating its policies. All 836 million spam posts were flagged by an artificial intelligence program before human users reported them, according to the report.

The report comes in the face of increasing criticism about how Facebook controls the content it shows to users, though the company was clear to highlight that its new methods are evolving and aren't set in stone, CNET's Parker reports. Find us on Facebook too! Facebook said users were more aggressively posting images of violence in places like war-torn Syria.

Facebook just released crucial information that showcased how the social media company is acting against people producing inappropriate content or fake accounts.

For serious issues like graphic violence and hate speech, our technology still doesn't work that well and so it needs to be checked by our review teams.

"As Mark Zuckerberg said at F8, we have a lot of work still to do to prevent abuse, .It's partly that technology like artificial intelligence, while promising, is still years away from being effective for most bad content because context is so important".

Since the fallout over political firm Cambridge Analytica obtaining millions of Facebook users' data without their permission, Facebook reiterated its commitment to being more transparent.
