Last Thursday, the first case was reported in a city - in Mbandaka, a transport hub located on the Congo River.

A wave of panic hit Kinshasa on Wednesday, after rumors of an Ebola case admitted to the Kinshasa General Hospital.

It said that it was unable to confirm if a death in Bikoro was Ebola after the local residents refused to allow officials to take blood samples. "Patient adherence is paramount".

Government officials are doctors are on high alert after two Ebola-infected patients left a hospital this week against strict recommendations, fueling fears that the virus might have spread even further.

The WHO and MSF said they could not force patients to stay in hospital but hoped that growing awareness of the disease and its risks would convince people to follow medical advice. Health officials are undertaking "highly targeted vaccinations". There are around 80 ports between the two cities.

Congo's health ministry said there are now 28 confirmed Ebola cases, 21 probable ones and two suspected.

"It is really important that we redouble our efforts to engage with the community so that everyone understands how Ebola is being transmitted, and that keeping the sick person at home not only decreases the chances of survival for this person, because this person then is not receiving supportive treatment, but is also putting at risk the whole family", added Mr. Jasarevic.

"We're really on an epidemiological knife-edge here", Salama told Devex, a media platform for the global development community.

World Health Organization Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus told a meeting in Geneva on Saturday that "I am personally committed to ensuring that we do everything we can to stop this outbreak as soon as possible".

Doctors Without Borders (Medecins sans frontiere - MSF) team members walk through an Ebola security zone at the entrance of the Wangata Reference Hospital in Mbandaka, northwest of DR Congo on May 20, 2018.

Worrying factors include the spread of confirmed cases to Mbandaka city and the fact that five health workers have been infected, signaling "a potential for further amplification", he said.

Sledgehammer road rage attack
NBC10 reports that the incident occurred around 1:30 p.m. on Tuesday, in the parking lot of a business on East Luzerne Street. The driver of the pickup truck then strikes the passenger with the sledgehammer before breaking the rear window of the SUV.

Exposure to the dead body, bodily fluids, and personal items of people who died of Ebola can spread the disease.

Fauci said mAb114, which is made from the antibodies of a survivor of a 1995 Ebola outbreak in Congo, is promising because it comes in crystallised form and does not need to be kept cold.

"It is hard to recall a situation of an outbreak where a government has responded more quickly and more decisively than in this outbreak", he said.

"It looks like it takes a little longer to develop the immune response, but at the same time it may last a lot longer.it could be an ideal vaccine for healthcare workers, for example, who you could proactively vaccinate and know that they are protected for 10 years or so".

Since the outbreak was declared in Bikoro on May 8, 58 cases of Ebola have been reported with 27 deaths.

The urban setting sets this outbreak apart from the eight others that have struck Congo since the 1970s in mostly containable, rural settings.

The countries are the Central African Republic, the Republic of Congo, Angola, Burundi, Rwanda, South Sudan, Tanzania, Zambia and, to a lesser extent, Uganda.

World Health Organization began vaccinations this week and is using a "ring vaccination" approach, targeting the contacts of people infected or suspected of infection and then the contacts of those people.

It would be impractical and counter-productive to ask security guards, who are not equipped with protective gear, to forcibly restrain patients, said Nahid Bhadelia, medical director of the special pathogens unit at Boston University Medical Center, who worked in an Ebola treatment unit in Sierra Leone during its 2014-2016 outbreak.

Those infected with Ebola can suffer from severe internal bleeding, fever, diarrhea and vomiting.

The U.K. on Wednesday pledged another 5 million pounds ($6.6 million) to help combat the outbreak.
