Astronaut Alan Bean, 4th human to walk on moon, has died, NASA announces NASA Astronaut Alan Bean dies at 86

Alan Bean the fourth astronaut to walk on the moon before becoming a painter died Saturday at the age of 86 in Texas. He was the love of my life and I miss him dearly'. "A native Texans, Alan died peacefully in Houston surrounded by those who loved him". "His death followed his suddenly falling ill while on travel in Fort Wayne, Indiana two weeks before", the statement said on Saturday.

According to NASA, Bean was commissioned as a U.S. Navy pilot in 1955, and he joined NASA's astronaut corps in 1963.

Said Bridenstine: "After logging 1,671 hours and 45 minutes in space, Alan passed the baton to the next generation of astronauts and changed fronts, looking to push the boundaries of his own imagination and ability as an artist".

NASA tweeted saying Bean was Spacecraft Commander of Skylab Mission II who retired from NASA in 1981 and devoted his retirement to painting.

According to NASA, Bean based that decision on his almost two decades of experience as an astronaut "during which he visited places and saw things no artist's eye had ever seen firsthand".

Over the course of that third career, Bean created more than 100 paintings that he said marked "the beginning of a new category in the progression of art history: art of human experiences off our home planet".

Mr. Bean returned to space in July 1973, when he commanded a three-man flight to the orbiting space research station Skylab, the forerunner of the International Space Station.

The fourth man to walk on the moon, Alan Bean (in 2008), has died at age 86, following a sudden illness.

In the four decades before he died, he spent his time making Apollo-themed paintings featured canvases textured with lunar boot prints, made using acrylics embedded with small pieces of his moon dust-stained mission patches.

Back in 1998, Mr Bean described his preparation for the moon landing as "Christmas and your birthday rolled into one", adding: "I mean, can you think of anything better?" "And for most of the other guys, most of the things they think about come from the left side".

"I would say I had zero philosophical thoughts at that time", Bean told NPR of his time on the moon in 2014.

He is survived by his wife, a sister and two children from a prior marriage, a daughter Amy Sue and son, Clay.
