Canada to nationalise Kinder Morgan oil pipeline to save project

Darfield Canada to buy Trans Mountain pipeline for $4.5 billion to ensure it gets built

Since last summer, the B.C. government led by Premier John Horgan has objected to the pipeline being built.

Canada's government is intervening in the conflict over the construction of Kinder Morgan's Trans Mountain Expansion Project with an unusual decision.

On CHOK's The Talk Show, live from Parliament Hill Tuesday morning, Marilyn Gladu criticized the spending of $4.5-billion of taxpayers money to try to get the pipeline built.

Kinder Morgan Canada halted pipeline work in April, while trying to determine if it could proceed with the project because of opposition.

"Is federal government involvement an elegant way to maybe sell some interest to an Indigenous consortium or the Alberta government?" he asked.

The Canadian Press has learned there are three options on the table, which include the government buying and building the expansion, then selling it once it's complete; and buying it on an interim basis, then selling it to investors and leaving them to handle the construction.

The Trans Mountain pipeline expansion project would vastly increase Canada's ability to export oil to Asia.

We need to get back to that formula, for the sake of Canadians.

The federal government's decision to buy the Kinder Morgan Trans Mountain pipeline for $4.5 billion is fuelling more controversy.

China vows to protect its interests from 'reckless' US trade threats
The tariffs will be focused on the tech sectors and high-growth industries identified in China's "Made in China 2025" program. Either way, repeated changes to the USA strategy on China may only bog down talks with Beijing moving forward, Reinsch said.

"I know that many British Columbians feel very passionately about this project and I encourage them to continue to express their disappointment within the rule of law", he said.

One wall of the conference room was dominated by a giant map showing the pipeline's route.

Trudeau would not tip his hand Monday on the state of talks with Kinder Morgan, but reiterated his government's constant refrain that the project is absolutely going to be built.

The pipeline has faced a number of legal and regulatory challenges from the BC government that has delayed construction of the project, which was approved by the federal government in 2016. If B.C.'s minority government, dependent on a handful of Green Party legislators, can scuttle Trans Mountain, federal authority and credibility are out the window.

The Trans Mountain pipeline expansion has become a dinner table debate across the nation this week.

The announcement was made by Canada's finance minister, Bill Morneau, who called the proposed purchase "an investment in Canada's future". His days of getting out of Canada to bask in the adoring selfies are over.

"My expectation is that the outrage is going to grow and we're not just going it see it here in British Columbia but we're going to see it nationally and internationally", she said, adding social media makes it possible for activists to connect in ways that didn't exist at the height of anti-logging protests in 1993.

"Our government believes that the commercial agreement we have reached with Kinder Morgan is the best way to protect thousands of good, well-paying jobs while delivering a solid return on investment for Canadians", said Minister of Finance Bill Morneau.
