The attack on the new building of the Ministry of Interior of Afghanistan, on the airport road in Kabul, ended after nearly two hours when 10 attackers were killed by government forces, a spokesman for the ministry confirmed. Danish said that based on initial information one police officer was killed and five others injured.

In Kabul, the gunmen who attacked the Interior Ministry were either shot dead by police or died when they detonated their explosives, Danesh said.

Nicholson said the Taliban commanders had assembled upon returning from the western province of Farah, where their fighters had attacked multiple security checkpoints and briefly taken control of the provincial city of the same name.

He said there may also have been civilian casualties but those details would be released later. Footage from the scene indicates the uniforms were likely an imitation of American military wear.

Two blasts went off outside the ministry compound before assailants attempted to storm the building, triggering fierce clashes with security forces that lasted for hours.

On Wednesday, Task Force Southwest announced U.S. Forces-Afghanistan conducted a series of strikes on the Taliban over a 10-day period that resulted in the deaths of more than 70 senior Taliban leaders.

The attack on a meeting of commanders in the district of Musa Qala in Helmand, one of the heartlands of the Taliban insurgency, was a significant blow to the insurgents, said Lt. Col. Martin O'Donnell, spokesman for US forces in Afghanistan.

He said the tactics used in the attack "track with" the tactics that the Haqqani faction has used in the past. ISIS is an alternative acronym for IS.

Last week, a USA government watchdog group said the administration's revamped strategy has made little progress against the Taliban insurgency, leaving the country a "dangerous and volatile" place almost 17 years after the US invaded. Their relentless assaults underscore the struggles that Afghan forces have faced since the United States and North Atlantic Treaty Organisation concluded their combat mission in Afghanistan at the end of 2014.

Critics warn the US-backed Afghan army can not promise to defeat the Taliban or overcome Afghanistan's vast political divisions and entrenched corruption.

Gen. Miller's appointment may foreshadow a major increase in U.S. Special Forces raids, said Michael Pregent, a former intelligence officer specializing in the Middle East and North Africa.

An Afghan official says at least two police officials were killed in suicide-bomb attacks at a police station in eastern Logar province.

Sources have said National Directorate of Security (NDS) operatives were prevented by police force members from entering the area to help end the attack.

The bomber struck outside the ministry on Wednesday, allowing several gunmen to pass through an outer gate where they traded fire with security forces, who eventually killed the attackers.

The Taliban have not officially responded, but deadly attacks have proliferated since then, particularly in Kabul, which has become the most risky place in the country for civilians. He said at least 50 leaders were killed. He said the victims included mechanics who had been contracted to fix Afghan army vehicles.

IS claimed responsibility just hours after the noon attack in Kabul.
