He had been denounced by pro-government politicians in Russia over comments on social media about the Russian bombing of Syria, and over his characterization of Russia as an aggressor toward Ukraine.

Ukrainian and Russian officials immediately traded finger-pointing over his death.

Gritsak said killing Babchenko was part of a larger alleged plot by Russian security services.

"It is pathetic and regrettable that the Ukrainian police have played with the truth, whatever their motive... for the stunt", Christophe Deloire, the head of the Paris-based media watchdog, told AFP. They said the gunman may have had accomplices.

Russia's foreign ministry said it was "glad" Babchenko was still alive, but also said the story had a "propaganda effect", according to Russian news agency Interfax.

Grytsak, during his press conference, thanked Babchenko and his family, who he said were in the loop about the secret operation. The case has remained unsolved.

"Ukraine is becoming the most unsafe country for reporters", Russian lawmaker Yevgeny Revenko said in remarks carried by the state RIA Novosti news agency.

"A man was shot in Kiev".

Neither Babchenko nor Ukrainian Security Service chief Vasyl Gritsak provided details of how they staged Babchenko's injuries or made his wife believe he was dead.

Russian lawmaker Denis Voronenkov was shot and killed at the entrance of a hotel in Kiev a year ago.

News of the "death" of the prominent Russian war correspondent and former soldier set off a series of recriminations between Kiev and Moscow, and pictures and flowers had been laid by mourners at the Russian embassy in Kiev. He had served in the Russian army during the two wars in Chechnya in 1990s and became one of Russia's best-known war reporters.

He wrote about his experience as a young soldier in the Chechen campaigns in a book published in English under the title "One Soldier's War".

In a Facebook post hours before the fake killing, Babchenko wrote about his "second birthday" when a Ukrainian general refused to let him on a helicopter that was then shot down by Kremlin-backed rebels, killing 14 people on board in 2014.

Some of his articles and posts outraged many Russians.

Several Russian lawmakers even called for stripping Babchenko of his citizenship over the comment.

In a controversial 2016 Facebook post, Babchenko wrote he had "no sympathy or pity" for the victims of a plane crash carrying Russia's Red Army choir to Syria given Moscow's support for Bashar al-Assad.

Babchenko left Russian Federation in February 2017 after receiving threats, living first in the Czech Republic, then in Israel, before moving to Kiev.

He moved to Kyiv last fall, where he worked as a host for the Crimean Tatar TV station, ATR. The aircraft was shot down minutes later.
