In addition to the remote worker plan, Vermont has also launched a program called "Stay to Stay Weekends" aimed at convincing the state's 13 million annual tourists to relocate there.

Goldstein said her office is already getting inquiries from workers interested in relocating.

If you're a remote worker, you're in luck.

Calling all remote workers: Vermont has a deal for you.

To qualify, workers must be employed full time with a company based outside Vermont, and move to the Green Mountain State on or after January 1, 2019.

Lyons said the bill doesn't target specific industries, but those who work in video gaming, travel, or software development could find the new program to be a good opportunity. The average resident is older than the majority of the USA population and the state is concerned about a rapidly shrinking tax base.

The act, which pertains to the promotion of remote workers and remote work arrangements, was signed to legislation on May 30 by Vermont Governor Phil Scott. At that point, the worker is eligible for a grant of up to $5,000 to help cover relocation costs and other qualified expenses, such as broadband access and computer hardware.

Vermont is introducing a creative way to make its population a little less grey.

"This is a piece of a much larger puzzle", Michael Schirling, the commerce secretary, told The Burlington Free Press.

"The one thing we need more of in Vermont is people", said Adam Grinold, executive director of the Brattleboro Development Credit Corporation, according to CNBC.

In 2020, the program is expected to receive up to $250,000, then $125,000 in 2021. The rapidly shrinking tax base is leading to an economic crisis in the northeastern state, and as a result, Vermont is experimenting with innovative ways to attract new residents. The funds will be distributed on a first come, first served basis, and only $125,000 will be given out in 2019.
