Visa is now experiencing some technical difficulties across Europe, which means thousands of people can't process payments on their cards this evening. "We are working to resolve the issue as quickly as possible".

Visa announced that its s payment system is operating normally again after a hardware failure affected customers in several European countries.

Bank of Ireland said it was aware of the disruptions but that people can withdraw cash from ATMs.

Visa said on Friday that a "service disruption" had hit its payment system, leaving some businesses unable to process purchases by its cardholders. When we visited in the evening, the shop was only accepting cash payments and a long queue of customers had formed at two ATM machines outside the store.

Payments processed through Visa's systems account for £1 in £3 of all United Kingdom spending. Chip and Pin is apparently suffering severe problems but others are reporting that contactless is proving more successful.

The company admitted it has not achieved its goal of having its system operating all of the time and stated the fault as "the result of hardware failure". "This is an issue with Visa and not us I'm afraid". Vetr upgraded shares of Visa from a "buy" rating to a "strong-buy" rating and set a $137.20 price target for the company in a report on Thursday, February 22nd.

Shoppers have been left unable to pay for goods due to a Visa outage. She told The Independent: "I had to leave some shopping in Sainsbury's because my card wouldn't work".

HSBC's UK Twitter account replied to a customer query on Twitter: "We believe there may have recently been issues with Visa's payments processing".
