Barça's technical department are keen to strengthen the central defence positions and give Piqué and Umtiti competition for a place.

Speaking to reporters at the contract signing on Monday morning, Bartomeu said: "We think that, with this clause, nobody will think of coming here to try to take him away".

Manchester United haven't been alone in pursuit of the player, with Real Madrid linked with a shock move for him as well.

Before putting pen to paper on a fresh five-year deal, Manchester United had been eyeing a deal for the Frenchman.

The fact Samuel has renewed his contract is great news for Barcelonistas.

Umtiti signs his new deal.

Barcelona president Josep Maria Bartomeu is confident that rival clubs will steer clear of making an approach for Samuel Umtiti due to the size of his release clause.

Neymar's departure clearly scared Barca.

The loss of Neymar for €222m to Paris Saint-Germain last August exacerbated fears Umtiti could be tempted to leave, just two years after signing from Lyon in a €25m deal.

The France global, who is preparing to represent Les Bleus at the World Cup later this month, penned a new five-year contract extension at Barcelona on Sunday night. However, after committing his future to Barca until 2023, with his release clause rising to €500m, he said he never considered leaving.
