Facebook shared user data with Apple and Samsung

Facebook's agreements with device makers are under scrutiny Facebook's agreements with device makers are under

In premarket trading Monday, Facebook stock was down about 1.3%.

However, the FTC's former chief technologist said that the decision to override sharing restrictions was concerning.

"Facebook's secret data sharing partnerships raise urgent new reasons for stronger privacy protections", said Democratic Senator Richard Blumenthal.

If Facebook said that it removed open-access to your data, but access was still granted to 60 companies, how is that not lying?

Facebook confirmed the agreements but said they were used for creating "Facebook-like experiences" before app stores were the norm.

While Facebook says these agreements were important and that it had tight control over these partnerships from the get-go, even company employees weren't happy allowing outside companies to access their users' data.

Under scrutiny this time is the company's practice of sharing information about its users with dozens of smartphone and tablet makers. In response, a spokesman for BlackBerry stressed that it "has always been in the business of protecting, not monetising, customer data".

Facebook declined to comment on its relationship with Huawei or ZTE. But the company said it phased out its system in April. And Facebook stressed in a blog post it is "not aware of any abuse by these companies".

Supreme Court rules for Christian baker in Masterpiece Cakeshop case
The court held that the Colorado Civil Rights Commission showed hostility toward the baker based on his religious beliefs. The Colorado Supreme Court declined to hear an appeal , and the case wound up before the Supreme Court last spring.

To that end, Warner, the top Democrat on the Senate Intelligence Committee, has pressed Facebook to detail if its partners included Huawei and ZTE, according to a spokeswoman, given that some lawmakers and USA national security officials have identified the firms as major security threats.

However, it now seems Facebook did not cut off this access for everyone, so millions of people's data was-and indeed is-still being shared without their knowledge.

The Times report says Facebook allowed the companies access to the data of friends of the user without their explicit consent, a practice that landed the company in the crosshairs of Congress during the Cambridge Analytica scandal.

8/ This wasn't a small misstatement - the crux of Facebook's argument was that they fixed the friend permission problem in 2014. "You shouldn't be able to lie to people". The company claims that these private APIs were "tightly controlled" in a statement posted on the Facebook newsroom. It also called into question repeated assurances offered by CEO Mark Zuckerberg in testimonies that users have control over their information. "And it was my mistake, and I'm sorry", he said before congress.

Facebook said it had begun dismantling pacts with device makers dating back as much as a decade - when the social network was rarely directly installed on phones. Microsoft similarly said it kept such data on its phones and did not sync it to remote servers.

Legally, Facebook's fate may rest on a few key phrases.

In interviews to NYT, Facebook defended its data-sharing agreement and asserted that these are consistent with its privacy policies, the FTC agreement and pledges to users. But it exempts "service provider [s]" who help Facebook carry out basic functions of its site.

According to Facebook Vice President Ime Archibong, "these partnerships work very differently from the way in which app developers use our platform" and aren't similar to the way certain apps/games can gain access to your account information. "It may be they see [device makers] as first parties, but they're plainly not under the consent decree". "F.T.C. orders are not suggestions".
