On Saturday, National Guard troops, police and firefighters ushered evacuees from homes on the eastern tip of the island, hours before lava cut off road access to the area, officials said. Authorities will attempt to airlift individuals out of the neighborhood if the lava spreads further.

Authorities warned residents for days to leave the area as well as nearby Leilani Estates and Vacationland - but some people refused to go, saying they would not abandon their homes. About 2,500 people have been evacuated from their homes since May 3.

Between May 4 and Monday, there have been almost 10,000 earthquakes, according to the US Geological Survey. Both are at risk of being cut off as lava flows toward the ocean and blocks potential escape routes.

Lava from Hawaii's erupting Kilauea volcano has destroyed more than 100 homes in a rural Big Island district.

Hawaii County Civil Defense continues to coordinate the effort to evacuate, and in some cases rescue, the residents in the lava-inundated area of Kapoho, as Fissure 8 is sending a robust lava channel downslope to the ocean.

After vigorous eruptions from the Kilauea volcano, almost a dozen people were left stranded in an area cut off by lava, Hawaii authorities announced Sunday.

In addition, at over four weeks, this eruption has lasted longer than the 1955 and 1924 eruptions, the USGS said.

But the Hawaii Civil Defense Agency said the fallout will affect the volcano and Pahala areas, and cautioned about the possibility of aftershocks. They stopped to inquire of their situation, and then when asked, airlifted them to a safe place. "Period", county spokeswoman Janet Snyder told reporters. "There are still people in the inundation zone that can not, there's no way for them to get out".

A river of lava spewing from the foot of Hawaii's Kilauea Volcano swallowed about three dozen more homes on the Big Island during a weekend of destruction that brought to almost 120 the number of dwellings devoured as of June 4, 2018.

Besides the lava, there's also the danger of "vog", or volcanic smog.

Toxic sulfur dioxide gas emissions have created an additional hazard.

Laze is formed when hot lava hits the ocean sending hydrochloric acid and steam with tiny glass particles into the air.

Civil Defense says Government Beach Road, between Kahakai Boulevard and Cinder Road, is open to Waa Waa and Papaya Farms Road residents only with official credentials.

Additionally, the drone camera's live stream was able to allow the USGS to direct other residents out of hazardous areas, due to the more informed bird's-eye view.
