‘Solo’ still No. 1 but drops 65 percent in 2nd weekend

It's still a decent movie, it just hasn't captured the audience it should have.

Solo is the first of the new Star Wars movies to not open in December, and it comes just five months after the release of The Last Jedi in December 2017. Wookies are only ever usually seen as honorable and loyal in the Star Wars universe, from defending Yoda and the Jedi during Palpatine's lethal Order 66 to Chewbacca's unquestionable loyalty to Han Solo through dire and unsafe circumstances.

The movie didn't even hit the $150 million mark for its second weekend of release, and it brought in less than $30 million this past weekend.

There are a number of factors that may have contributed to Solo's second disappointing weekend. However, Solo still held better overseas than its Star Wars predecessors, Star Wars: The Last Jedi (67% drop) and Rogue One (65% drop).

According to THR, Solo will likely top out at around $400 million globally, which is very low compared to the three previous Star Wars films.

While that was enough to win "Solo" the weekend, the third frame of "Deadpool 2" didn't fall too far behind. "Deadpool 2" grossed an estimated $23.3 million to take second place.

Directed by Ron Howard from a script by Lawrence and Jon Kasdan, Solo: A Star Wars Story stars Alden Ehrenreich as Han Solo, Donald Glover as Lando Calrissian, Emilia Clarke as Qi'ra and Joonas Suotamo as Chewbacca. "Adrift", from STX Entertainment, washed up in third place with $11.5 million, while the others struggled to make a significant impact.

Sea-faring romantic drama Adrift, starring Shailene Woodley and Sam Claflin, edged out Avengers: Infinity War for third place. Overseas, Infinity War brought in $24 million, bring it's worldwide total to $1.322 billion.

Disney's Solo: A Star Wars Story is now playing in theaters everywhere.

Internationally (including Canada), the film has grossed $115 million so far over a two-weekend span.

He argues "Solo's biggest problem was an uncharacteristically (for Disney) poor marketing campaign" and "we think the movie's biggest problem was its marketing".

The final wide release of the weekend was Johnny Knoxville's "Action Point", which landed with $2.2 million in 2,032 locations.

"This dip in box office slows the momentum for the industry, but the good news is that a host of big titles are on the way to help erase the memory of this gloomy June box office frame", said Paul Dergarabedian, a senior analyst at comScore.
