Paramount is targeting Top Gun: Maverick for theaters July 12, 2019.

It seemed insane that anyone might make a sequel to 1986's Top Gun without including Val Kilmer's Iceman, but then again, it seemed insane that anyone might make a sequel to 1986's Top Gun after Tony Scott died, and look where that assumption got us.

This may seem like a unusual time to finally deliver a sequel to the 32-year-old box office smash, but late director Tony Scott, who was offered the project prior to his death in 2012, saw the new world of the 2010s as an opportunity to try something different from his previous hit.

Joseph Kosinski is directing Top Gun: Maverick from a script by Eric Warren Singer, Peter Craig and Justin Marks. The sequel, which is being produced by leading man Cruise and Jerry Bruckheimer, is expected to reach movie theatres next summer.

Cruise shared the first photo from the set of the Top Gun sequel last week, posting a pic of himself stepping right back into his old uniform. Although the title Top Gun: Maverick floated around briefly, the film is now without an official title. Cruise tweeted on May 31 that production for the long-awaited sequel had started. Now, not only is Tom Cruise heading back into the lead role, but Val Kilmer is also heading back to the big screen as Iceman.

Top Gun: Maverick will feature a plot that finds the pilots battling with new technology. With Kenny Loggins on board for a new version of "Danger Zone", this movie just keeps getting better.
