G7 nations struggle to salvage summit as Trump attacks trade

President Donald Trump spoke during a news conference at the G-7 summit today.

In an earlier Twitter post, Trump said the United States would emerge victorious if other nations refused to accede to his trade demands, suggesting he plans to employ a take-it-or-leave-it bargaining position with other world leaders at the Group of Seven summit here.

The United States' closest trading partners - the EU, Canada and Mexico - have vowed to impose retaliatory tariffs on scores of USA products beginning in the coming weeks.

Pierre Lampron, the president of Dairy Farmers of Canada, shot back at Trump's claims about his industry.

A photograph taken shows just how tight the handshake was, with Trump's hand left with a white mark.

Trump's tirade came before he was to leave for Singapore for his historic summit with the North Korean leader North Korea's Kim Jong Un.

Trump accused Trudeau of being "indignant" for "bringing up the relationship that the USA and Canada had over the many years and all sorts of other things".

When a CNN reporter asked Trump to respond to a question about whether he had sowed division in the G7 in what many have described as a G6-plus-one scenario, the president excoriated the reporter for perpetuating "fake news".

German Chancellor Angela Merkel arrives for the summit.

For weeks, tensions have been bubbling over an escalating trade battle fueled by the US's imposing tariffs on imports of steel and aluminum from Canada and the European Union. They should let Russian Federation back in.

In May, Trump hit Canada, Mexico and the European Union with steel and aluminum tariffs as part of an effort to create "FAIR TRADE" agreements with America's partners.

"If they thought they were going to lecture Trump on the glories of free trade, they got a rude awakening".

The two-day summit in Canada has been marred by fears of a trade war and tit-for-tat exchanges of hostile tweets, with United States trading partners furious over Mr Trump's decision to impose tariffs on steel and aluminium imports from Canada, the European Union and Mexico as part of his "America First" agenda.

In recent weeks, he has imposed a number of punitive tariffs on the European Union and Canada, which only served to heighten the tension between the USA and its allies that has been brewing since Trump announced he was withdrawing from the Iran nuclear deal and the Paris climate agreement.

He later said that Russia's return to the group would be "an asset" and that it would be a good move for peace in the world.

G7 participants were also angered by Trump's stance on climate climate - a key issue on the group's agenda. "I guess they are going to go back to the drawing board and check it out", Trump said.

While Mr Trump set a combative tone before even arriving at the summit with a series of tweets about unfair trade deals, he appeared affable and joking at multiple brief photo opportunities and praised Mr Macron for helping to work out trade issues.
