Thiem, who defeated 72nd seeded Italian 7-5, 7-6 (10), 6-1, reached his first Grand Slam final and will now face either Spanish tennis ace Rafael Nadal or Argentina's Juan Martin del Potro.

Del Potro missed six break points in the opener, including three at 4-4.

Having won the French open 10 times, the Spanish icon will look to secure his 11th title in Sunday's clash with Dominic Thiem.

"I'm very happy to return to the final at Roland Garros", he said. For me it's incredible.

"If I want to beat him, I have to play that way like I did in Rome and in Madrid", Thiem said.

He says: "I know how to play against him".

Patrick Mouratoglou, coach of Serena Williams and commentator for Eurosport, believes Thiem has the game to upset Nadal, but he'll need to execute his game plan perfectly.

At the French Open this year, Nadal has looked sluggish in the opening exchanges.

"The only way to beat Rafa on clay is to take risks.to over-achieve you have to over-play and risk more than you feel comfortable doing", Wilander said. They came from non-ATP level matches, which is where the vast majority of tennis' corruption takes place, but corrupt behavior at the lower levels becomes a problem when those players graduate to the big time.

"We have the burden of debt, so we will not be able to continue increasing prize money at the rhythm of previous years", said FFT chief Bernard Giudicelli.

Sunday's showdown may represent Thiem's best chance of winning a grand slam so far, but the Austrian has attempted to downplay the situation by living up to his underdog tag.

ESPN's Nicolas Pereira recaps Rafael Nadal's comfortable semifinal win over Juan Martin del Potro to set up a meeting with Dominic Thiem.

Del Potro is playing in the French Open semifinals for the first time in nine years. I have been on court just couple of minutes ago.

When del Potro avoided a bagel in the sixth game of the second, he raised his arms in celebration. It is worth relaying, though, that in last year's semifinal, Nadal dropped just seven games total against the Austrian.

At least Thiem has in the past found the key to unraveling the Nadal clay court enigma.

"He's been a very complex opponent".

It's a tactic Nadal has used more and more over the past year, mostly on clay and here at Roland Garros.

The 16-year-old Tseng, who beat Australian Open champion Sebastian Korda of the United States in the semi-finals, came back from a break down in the first set to claim his first Grand Slam title.

Cecchinato, who was suspended for match-fixing in 2016 before being cleared on a technicality, proved to be no pushover even though he had never won a match at a major before this year's French Open.

The first two sets saw the two players going neck to neck and playing excellent serves to gain valuable points.

"Not a very nice feeling", Thiem said.

Bresnik has taken plenty of flak through the years for pushing Thiem to play such a dense tournament schedule, but the coach has long insisted that it is part of a master plan to build a resilient champion. Thiem battled to a 7-5 7-6 and then walloped a clearly dejected Cecchinato 6-1 in the third to qualify for the final after making the semi-final on three consecutive occasions. Then Thiem got to 10-all with a drop shot of his own.
