A communication breakdown between a disaster agency and volcanologists in Guatemala delayed evacuations as gas and ash clouds cascaded down the Fuego volcano last Sunday in its most violent eruption in four decades, authorities have admitted.

One picture taken by a European satellite, the Sentinel-2, on Monday (June 4) showed the centre of the volcano as a bright, red spot with lava coming up and flowing down as a brown mass.

At a shelter in the Murray D. Lincoln school in the city of Escuintla, about 10 miles (15 kilometers) from the volcano's peak, Alfonso Castillo said he and his extended family of 30 had lived on a shared plot in San Miguel Los Lotes where each family had its own home.

Oscar Chavez trekked over a mountain with his father and younger brother to search for his brother Edgar, sister-in-law Sandra and 4-year-old nephew Josue in the hamlet of San Miguel Los Lotes, which was nearly entirely wiped out by the volcanic flows.

"It rained very hard yesterday".

But he said: "It is now essential that government makes progress on our long-term customs and other border arrangements". Both sides want a deal by October to avoid barriers on the Irish land border that might fuel new conflict in the north.

Seventy-five deaths have been confirmed so far, a toll that is expected to rise with at least 192 said to be missing. The resort was immediately evacuated following Sunday's eruption.

The family holed up in a house that heated up "like a boiler" inside, he said, then made their way onto the roof and then to the upper story of another, concrete home.

Chavez's younger brother was angry that there were no longer any disaster workers at the scene while a little way downhill heavy machinery was being used to clear a road blocked by ash. It is not right that they leave them there. The White House said the United States was sending emergency aid "to help meet food, water and sanitation needs for the affected population". "We could not get anything out", Castillo said.

Thursday morning the spokesperson of the Coordinating Agency for Disaster Reduction, David De Leon, announced the temporary suspension of the rescue operation due to bad weather conditions.

Hospital officials began working with Guatemalan and USA officials to mobilize this effort within 24 hours of the disaster, so the victims would be able to get immediate treatment and care.
