Three Palestinians killed by Israeli fire in fresh Gaza border clashes

Not surprisingly the Israel Football Association (IFA) were incandescent, accusing the Palestinians of crossing a "red line" by inciting anger towards the Argentinian players in order to scupper the match.

The encounter was called off on Tuesday after a campaign by the Palestinians following its relocation to Jerusalem.

Activist Ahmed Abu Artima said: "We want to remind the world that the Israeli occupation is committing the same massacres that the Nazis committed".

"We will proudly defend our right to defend our citizens time and again, and in every forum where our adversaries seek to falsely malign us", he added.

Most countries do not recognize either Israel's or the Palestinians' sovereignty in Jerusalem and have embassies to Israel in the Tel Aviv area.

It had originally been scheduled to take place the northern Israeli city of Haifa but was moved after pressure from Israel's hardline sports minister, Miri Regev.

The Gaza clashes reached their peak on May 14, the eve of the 70th anniversary of the Nakba Day (the Day of Catastrophe), which coincided this year with the USA embassy relocation from Tel Aviv to occupied Jerusalem al-Quds.

Israel considers Jerusalem its "indivisible" capital.

Rajoub commented on the cancellation of the match thanking the FA and the team saying it was "on the right track".

The Israeli army said it was dealing with a riot.

Rajoub laughed off Israeli threats of action, denying there was any intimidation.

The Qatar Football Association has provided funding to its Argentine counterpart in the past and, therefore, is likely handling the compensation cost, the Israelis suspect.

According to Israel's Army Radio, the country's Prime Minster Benjamin Netanyahu even called Argentinian President Mauricio Macri in an attempt to broker an agreement, but was told that there was "nothing he could do".

Netanyahu is now visiting Europe and his office could not immediately confirm the reports.

The report also said Macri was intending to attend the game himself along with a delegation of businessmen from the Argentine Jewish community.

"The cancellation ... is prompted by the same reasons, I raised in my letter to the Argentinian ambassador in Israel".

Argentina have made four previous pre-World Cup stopovers in Israel since 1986.

The Palestinians and their supporters are following the same route they took last December after the United States vetoed a Security Council resolution calling on US President Donald Trump to renounce his recognition of Israel as Jerusalem's capital.

He stated that the Gaza demonstrations, launched on March 30, would continue until Palestinians achieve their demand for a right of return to ancestral lands lost to Israel in its 1948 War of Independence.

Israeli troops opened fire on the Palestinians gathered near a Gaza fence on May 14 to protest against the inauguration of USA embassy in al-Quds.

Earlier this month, the U.S. vetoed a Kuwait-drafted resolution asking UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres to report on ways to protect Palestinian civilians, including an "international protection mechanism".
