Singapore is footing the hotel bill for North Korean leader Kim Jong Un and his contingent, Foreign Minister Vivian Balakrishnan said on Monday. Trump sat opposite Kim, flanked by Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, a translator, and White House Chief of Staff John Kelly. Kim is meeting Trump at the Sentosa Island in another half an hour.

With a USA president facing the prospect of his party being trounced in midterm elections and a North Korean leader eager for a coming out party on the global stage, what can Japan expect from Tuesday's historic summit?

Trump arrived in Singapore calling the summit a "one-time shot" for Kim, who is being urged to abandon his weapons program and normalize relations with the rest of the world in exchange for unspecified "protections" from the U.S. North Korea has long anxious about an American invasion and justifies its nuclear buildup as a way to defend itself.

Now he's in Singapore, ready to negotiate with U.S. President Donald Trump. Delegates were outlining specific goals for what the leaders should try to accomplish and multiple scenarios for resolving key issues, a senior U.S official said, adding that the meetings were also an ice breaker of sorts, allowing the teams to get better acquainted after decades of minimal contact between their nations. Trump said after a meeting with North Korean envoy Kim Yong-chul at the Whitehouse.

"Trump clearly has the upper hand here because the media in North Korea is so tightly controlled".

"Working together, we will get it taken care of", Trump concluded, as they headed for bilateral talks.

For the North, Mr Kim has already won a huge propaganda bonus by merely having the summit and sitting down as an equal with the US President, an accomplishment his father and grandfather sought but could never realise. However, the South Carolina Republican noted that he is "not here to spread democracy" or to unite the North with South Korea.

But many, if not all analysts, say that this is highly unlikely, given how hard it has been for Kim to build his program and that the weapons are seen as the only protection he has. It's aimed at settling a standoff over Pyongyang's nuclear arsenal. -North Korea summit in Singapore on June 11, 2018.

In March, Trump accepted on the spot an invitation by Kim to meet in person, without preconditions, setting the stage for Tuesday's historic event. Wearing a red "Make America Great Again" cap on camera, Rodman stressed that he had shown North Korea his loyalty and trustworthiness. Trump had said on Saturday he would know within a minute of meeting Kim whether he would reach a deal. Early in Trump's presidency, he raised eyebrows when he met with Russian President Vladimir Putin during a conference in Germany with only a Kremlin interpreter present.

Reuters could not confirm if leader Kim was staying in the Presidential Suite.
