A boy in the USA state of Idaho is recovering after contracting plague - the first human case in the state in more than two decades, health officials say.

The child - from Elmore County, located between Twin Falls and Boise - is only the fifth person to be infected with the bacterial disease in Idaho since 1940, the Idaho State Journalreported.

The department says there have only been 10 cases of plague involving people in both states since 1990.

The child is recovering, but no additional information on the youngster's conditions or identity was provided by the Idaho Department of Health and Welfare.

A child in Idaho is recovering after being struck with the plague, leaving many wondering how the plague exists in the 21st century. The disease was later spread from urban rats to rural rodent populations, and a small number of cases have since emerged in rural areas, according to the CDC.

It can now be treated relatively easily thanks to modern medicine.Left untreated, bubonic plague's symptoms can include visibly swollen lymph nodes, headaches, fever and vomiting.

It can be transmitted to humans through direct contact with an infected animal or flea, but person-to-person transmission is considered extremely rare.

Do not feed rodents in picnic or campground areas and never handle sick or dead rodents.

Talk to your veterinarian about using an appropriate flea control product on pets as not all products are safe for cats, dogs or children. Sick pets should be examined promptly by a veterinarian, especially if they may have had contact with sick or dead rodents.

Clean up areas near your home where rodents can live, such as woodpiles, and put hay, wood, and compost piles as far as away as possible.

The most common type is the bubonic plague, which represents 80 to 95 percent of cases.

Rapidly developing pneumonia with shortness of breath, chest pain, cough, bloody or watery mucous.

Plague is spread by fleas that carry the Yersinia pestis bacteria, which can cause the three forms of plague: bubonic, septicemic, and pneumonic.

Antibiotics are now effective in treating the disease, but officials say without prompt treatment, it can cause serious illness or death.
