Apple has announced that with iOS 12, iPhone users in the U.S. will be able to automatically share their location with first responders when they make 911 calls. Android's phone app shares users' Global Positioning System location during emergency calls.

Most 911 calls here and across the country are made from cell phones, but dispatchers don't get detailed information of where you're calling from. We firmly believe that the best technology should be available to 9-1-1 when it matters the most.

Apple Inc. said an upcoming software update for iPhones will include technology that more precisely locates 911 emergency calls, helping first responders more quickly find people in need of assistance. It will work in conjunction with HELO (Hybridized Emergency Location), which Apple introduced in 2015 to identify a 911 caller's location using cell towers and on-device data sources like Global Positioning System and Wi-Fi.

Apple is set to launch the next major version of iOS later this year with new digital health features, ARKit 2, and more.

While 911 operators can receive calls made by cell phones and smartphones, the centers use "outdated, landline-era" equipment that make it extremely hard to pinpoint the location of a caller who, for one reason or another, can't provide the information.

Woman injures two people in SE France
The attacker, who was dressed in black and wore a veil, was subdued by the supermarket staff and later handed over to the police. The customer was taken to hospital a non life-threatening chest injury while the cashier suffered a minor eye injury.

By embracing this tech and making it a standard feature, Apple is actually complying with an FCC rule expected to come into force in 2021.

Apple is trying to solve a problem caused by the technological mismatch between a 50-year-old system built for landlines and today's increasingly sophisticated smartphones. User data can't be used for non-emergency purposes, Apple said.

The case which could have important implications for Apple and its mobile ecosystem hinges on whether the iPhone maker has a right to have a "closed" system where only the company can distribute mobile apps. "iOS location services are capable of exceeding this requirement today, even in challenging, dense, urban environments".

'This is going to save a lot of lives, ' said Wheeler, now a visiting professor at Harvard University.
