Brexit defeat for United Kingdom government

Theresa May said a trade border would be 'unacceptable' Theresa May said a trade border would be 'unacceptable'

Prime Minister Theresa May will not accept a proposal to hand parliament more control over Brexit, a source said on Tuesday, setting up a showdown with lawmakers who want to prevent Britain from crashing out of the European Union without a deal.

They backed, by 354 votes to 235, an amendment to the EU (Withdrawal) Bill created to strengthen the terms of the "meaningful vote" that Theresa May has promised to give Parliament.

They want Parliament to be given more powers if no deal is agreed, or if the agreement May makes with Brussels is deemed unacceptable by MPs.

Mrs May has warned against any moves to "tie her hands" during negotiations with Brussels, saying parliament must not be able to "overturn the will of the British people".

Theresa May put off a likely Commons defeat last week by promising rebels a compromise on the issue in the European Union withdrawal bill.

The leader of the pro-EU Tory rebels has denied the Government will fall if it suffers a defeat in the Commons on its flagship Brexit bill.

"We are absolutely confident that we will deliver a Brexit deal that. would be good for the United Kingdom, good for our European friends and partners".

However, the Conservative member of Parliament Dominic Grieve told the BBC that he fears a "no deal" scenario and he is willing to see the government "collapse" to avert this possibility.

Pique in hot water with Barca
Griezmann, a target for Barca, was the star of the television documentary La Decision, which aired on Thursday. The Frenchman was reported to be moving away from the club, with Barcelona in line to sign him.

"It has been suggested I want to collapse the government, I do not".

Andrew Mitchell, the former Conservative Party Chief Whip, speaks to former Attorney General Dominic Grieve, as an anti-Brexit protester stands near them opposite the Houses of Parliament in London, Britain, May 10, 2018.

But pro-Brexit MP Nigel Evans said he was "staggered" by Mr Grieve's remarks.

The vote kicks the controversial issue back to the Commons in a further round of parliamentary "ping pong" with MPs expected to debate it on Wednesday.

"And part of that has got to be where, if Michel Barnier tries to give us a very bad deal, that she can turn around and say "no, I'd rather not do that".

Downing Street said the government had set out its position on Lords reform earlier this year when the prime minister called for "restraint" in the appointment of new peers following proposals to reduce the size of the upper chamber.

The "meaningful vote" is the last issue of the EU Withdrawal Bill that remains unresolved after MPs last week voted in favor of the government on other aspects of the bill.

"By having a mechanism by which the Commons can express a view without, for example, moving to a motion of no confidence which could collapse the government, that can give us time to both influence the government and think what best to do next".
