Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's wife, Sara Netanyahu, is charged with fraud and breach of trust over her ordering of food for private meals from pricey restaurants.

Although the prime minister is not implicated in this case, the charges against his wife could have far-reaching consequences for his political standing and appear likely to damage his public image. Prosecutors say Netanyahu had the government pick up the tab - and falsely claimed there wasn't a cook at the residence.

Israelis have been holding weekly protests to demand the prime minister's resignation over the corruption scandals, but Netanyahu has described the events as part of efforts meant to topple him "at any cost".

Sara Netanyahu has long faced allegations of abusive behaviour and living extravagantly in a manner out of touch with the general public.

Charges against Sara Netanyahu for these 15 instances were closed by Mandelblit as there was insufficient evidence to prove that she knew about Seidoff's and the others' actions. For years, she has been accused of leading an extravagant lifestyle.

Police have recommended charges against Mr. Netanyahu in two investigations, but no indictments have.

In a statement posted on the prime minister's Facebook page, her lawyers called the indictment "baseless and delusional".

"This is the first time in Israel and in the world that the wife of a leader is brought to justice over food trays", it said.

Her husband is himself under investigation on suspicion of corruption offences. He has denied any wrongdoing, dismissing the accusations against him and his wife as a media witch-hunt.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu appeared to dismiss the investigation previous year.

The Prime Minister is alleged to have awarded regulatory favours to Bezeq Telecom Israel in return for favourable coverage on a news site the company's owner controls, Israel Radio reported.

In September 2017, Israel's attorney general, Avichai Mandelblit, announced he was minded to file an indictment subject to a pre-indictment hearing, which took place in January.

Netanyahu is suspected of accepting lavish gifts from billionaire friends, and promising to promote legislation to help a major Israeli newspaper against its free rival in exchange for favourable coverage.
