Gaming Disorder is a real addiction insists the WHO

The decision to include gaming disorder in ICD-11, the latest edition of the disease classification manual, was based on reviews of available evidence, says World Health Organization, which claims the decision reflects a consensus of experts from different disciplines and geographical regions involved in the process of technical consultations undertaken by WHO. Researchers use it to count deaths, diseases, injuries and symptoms, and doctors and other medical practitioners use it to diagnose disease and other conditions.

If the condition leads to significant distress and impairment in personal, familial, social, educational or occupational functioning.

But the definition is controversial - not everyone agrees that it's the right thing to classify excessive gaming as a disorder.

The condition will be added to the WHO's International Classification of Diseases (ICD-11).

At a press conference today, World Health Organization researchers reminded the audience that gambling addiction has also always been listed in the ICD.

The policy has led to the separation of roughly 2,000 children from their families, who are being prosecuted separately. If we don't do it, you will be inundated with people and you really won't have a country", Trump said.

Are you concerned that your child might be addicted to video games? Gaming disorder has been added to the section on mental and addictive disorders because demand for services to tackle this condition has been growing.

For a diagnosis to be made, the negative pattern of behavior must last at least 12 months: "It can not be just an episode of few hours or few days", Poznyak said. She explains: "People need to understand this doesn't mean every child who spends hours in their room playing games is an addict, otherwise medics are going to be flooded with requests for help". It's also when that gamer also can not control their behavior.

"A key principle in this revision was to simplify the coding structure and electronic tooling - this will allow health care professionals to more easily and completely record conditions", says Dr. Robert Jakob, team leader, Classifications Terminologies and Standards, WHO.

"The new catalogue, which still needs to be approved by United Nations member countries, so-called "gender incongruence" is now listed under "conditions related to sexual health", instead of "mental, behavioural and neurodevelopmental disorders".

This classification is controversial, as many psychologists think the data available is premature and that this behavior could likely be a coping mechanism for anxiety or depression. Much like any other kind of addiction, they find it impossible to resist the urge to play games or to stop after they have been playing for more than what many would consider being a healthy period of time.
